Turns out, though, author George RR Martin wasn't keen on something the show did much earlier on, as he pointed to a scene between Emilia Clarke 's Daenerys and Jason Momoa's Khal Drogo in the show's pilot. In Martin's book series, the two characters ultimately consummate their marriage consensually, despite the fact that the 13 to year-old Daenerys was forced into marrying the older Dothraki warrior.

GRRM always claimed that he wanted to make his characters and their situations as realistic as possible , and have them face realistic obstacles with real consequences , so why is Daenerys a major POV character one of the most unrealistic characters in the series? When readers are first introduced to Daenerys, she comes across as a believable, frightened, and timid child. A thirteen year old girl who is abused and controlled by her older brother, and who is about to be sold of into a marriage that terrifies her. It is a sad story. But it is a real story.

This led to the crew finding out that the horse they had assumed to be a female was actually a male who got 'excited' by watching two humans.




Daenerys Targaryen is married to Khal Drogo in a ceremony that lasts all day with a dozen deaths. When night falls, Drogo takes Daenerys for a long ride before making love. While waiting for Daenerys ' wedding, Illyrio Mopatis explains that Drogo 's khalasar of 40, Dothraki warriors and their families and herds gathered outside the walls of Pentos have made the other magisters so uneasy that they have doubled the city guard. The Dothraki are eating everything in sight, and Illyrio thinks it would be best to have the marriage as soon as possible.
