The present day flag of the African Union was adopted to replace the previous flag that had been used for around seven years. Yadesa was one of two artists living in the diaspora who entered the competition. He learned of his victory in the contest on CNN, two years after he had submitted his design for consideration. Apart from attending the ceremony Yadesa also got to spend time with African heads of state like Jacob Zuma who was at the time the president of South Africa, who complemented the flag. The design incorporated all these aspects with a green Africa as the centrepiece of the design. A ring of golden stars circles the map to represent the member countries.

Fred Brownell: The man who made South Africa's flag
The multi-coloured flag of modern South Africa is a symbol of its post-apartheid rebirth. But while Nelson Mandela led the country on a "long walk" to freedom, the creation of the flag 20 years ago was a frantic sprint by an unsung hero, writes Xin Fan. On a Saturday night at the end of February Fred Brownell's phone rang. The voice on the other end asked him to get a new national flag designed - within a week.

The flag of South Africa was designed in March and adopted on 27 April , at the beginning of South Africa 's general election , to replace the flag that had been used since The new national flag , designed by the then State Herald of South Africa Frederick Brownell , was chosen to represent the country's new democracy after the end of apartheid. The flag has horizontal bands of red on the top and blue on the bottom , of equal width, separated by a central green band which splits into a horizontal "Y" shape, the arms of which end at the corners of the hoist side and follow the flag's diagonals. The "Y" embraces a black isosceles triangle from which the arms are separated by narrow yellow or gold bands ; the red and blue bands are separated from the green band and its arms by narrow white stripes. The stripes at the fly end are in the ratio.
