A phone connector , also known as phone jack , audio jack , headphone jack or jack plug , is a family of electrical connectors typically used for analog audio signals. The standard is that a plug described as the male connector will connect with a jack described as female. The phone connector was invented for use in telephone switchboards in the 19th century and is still widely used. The phone connector is cylindrical in shape, with a grooved tip to retain it. In its original audio configuration, it typically has two, three, four or, occasionally, five contacts. Three-contact versions are known as TRS connectors , where T stands for "tip" , R stands for "ring" and S stands for "sleeve". Ring contacts are typically the same diameter as the sleeve, the long shank.

A phonograph , in its later forms also called a gramophone as a trademark since , as a generic name in the UK since or since the s called a record player , is a device for the mechanical recording and reproduction of sound. The sound vibration waveforms are recorded as corresponding physical deviations of a spiral groove engraved, etched, incised, or impressed into the surface of a rotating cylinder or disc, called a "record". To recreate the sound, the surface is similarly rotated while a playback stylus traces the groove and is therefore vibrated by it, very faintly reproducing the recorded sound.
