The long history of racism against Asian Americans in the U.S. | PBS NewsHour
Anti-Chinese sentiment has existed in the United States since the midth century, shortly after Chinese immigrants first arrived in the United States. Its origins can be traced to the American merchants, missionaries, and diplomats who sent home from China "relentlessly negative" reports of the people they encountered there. Some modern anti-Chinese sentiment may be the result of China's rise as a major world power seen to be at the expense of other countries. Starting with the California Gold Rush in the middle 19th century, the United States—particularly the West Coast states—enlisted large numbers of Chinese migrant laborers. Early Chinese immigrant worked as gold miners, and later on subsequent large labor projects, such as the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The decline of the Qing Dynasty in China, instability and poverty caused many Chinese, especially from the province of Guangdong , to emigrate overseas in search of a more stable life, and this coincided with the rapid growth of American industry.

New Site Collects Reports Of Racism Against Asian Americans Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
Coverage of the crisis from Fox News and other right-wing media outlets is now settling into familiar territory: racism, xenophobia, and nationalism. We can expect more of it all as the pandemic worsens. According to some right-wing media figures, anyone who pointed out what was going on were actually the ones obsessed with semantics in the middle of public health crisis:. It's an old trick pic.
But in recent pandemics, there have been concerted governmental efforts to thwart nativist attitudes and prejudice, using law as a tool. Starting as early as January , when most Americans were not feeling the daily effect of this pandemic as they are now, many Asian Americans were already starting to face discrimination, from people avoiding them in grocery store aisles to more violent hate crimes. This was due to the mistaken belief that they were somehow more likely to be infected because the first known COVID cases were in China. Such fear is not unwarranted.
